Dembel Emboch Products Project

WHAT WE DO

Dembel Emboch Products: Another perspective to water hyacinth (emboch).

Water Hyacinth / Dembel Emboch Products Centre
Since September 2022 we have a production centre in Ziway, where we store the dried water hyacinth and give space to the women and youths for their business production work.

Collection of water hyacinth from the lake
Together with the youths in Ziway, we harvest water hyacinth from the lake, that we use to produce briquettes and handicrafts. The water hyacinth is first dried in mobile drying sheds (near the place of collection) and then transported to our product centre.
We provide safety materials (gloves, boots, overalls) for the harvesting of the water hyacinth as it can be challenging work (insects, snakes, muddy water).

Products made from dried water hyacinth
The dried water hyacinth is very suitable for products, such as hats, baskets, and briquettes (for fuel). We are still in the prototyping phase for briquette making. For the production of hats and baskets, we now try to scale up the production and improve the quality.

Handicrafts Exhibition
A handicrafts exhibition was held at Haile Resort, Batu on 16 February 2023. The event showcased a range of different materials made from water hyacinth  produced by women that were skilled in handicrafts making. The event provided a valuable platform for women to show their work and gain exposure, and for visitors to discover how water hyacinth can be used as input for business. The exhibition received overwhelming positive feedback from guests, who praised the products and appreciated it.
